The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has proposed to approve the product Off! Clip-On Mosquito Repellent from S.C. Johnson & Son PTY LTD. The product contains the active ingredient metofluthrin and is for use as a personal insect repellent.
Metofluthrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide. This class of chemicals acts on the nervous system of insects, disturbing the function of neurons by interacting with sodium channels. The product, Off! Clip-on Mosquito Repellent containing metofluthrin at 322.6 g/L is a battery powered vaporizer device intended to be used as a personal insect repellent for the control of flying insects. There are no proposed agricultural uses for metofluthrin.
APVMA will open public comment until February 12th, 2013.
