Chinese paraquat plan under evaluation
Date:09-02-2008
A proposal by the Chinese agrochemical company, Weifang Luba Chemical, to manufacture 6,000 tonnes/year of the herbicide, paraquat, is being evaluated by the environmental engineering assessment centre of the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection. The evaluation aims to assess the probable environmental impact of the proposal’s implementation. The plant will be constructed in the newly-built Weifang pesticide technology zone, in Weifang, Shandong province, China, and will have an investment of Yuan 59 million ($8.6 million). Some Yuan 13 million ($1.9 million) of that would be directly invested in environmental protection, according to the China Crop Protection Industry Association (CCPIA). If the go-ahead is given, construction is set to begin in 2009. Paraquat was the second most exported agrochemical in China during the first ten months of 2007, with a total export value of $113.3 million.
