The heads of the G8 group of leading industrial nations have endorsed the use of biotechnology among a number of measures to tackle global food security. The G8 leaders called for accelerated research and development and increased access to new agricultural technologies to boost production. “We will promote science-based risk analysis, including the contribution of seed varieties developed through biotechnology,” the leaders declared at the G8 Summit in Hokkaido, Japan, this month.
The G8 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US.
