The 8th China Pesticide Exporting Workshop (2024 CPEW) was held in Hangzhou, China, on July 18 and 19, 2024.
During the two-day meeting, 25 speakers at home and abroad steered in-depth discussions on 23 hot topics.
AgroPages is presenting reports on the seven key topics addressed at the workshop.
Topic 2: Supply chain collaboration and biotechnology promoting Chinese pesticide industry upgrade
At the workshop, Huang Baiji, General Manager of Sino-Agri Leading Biosciences, shared the company’s business strategy and practices in building the non-selective herbicide supply chain value platform. The presentation pointed to the increasing uncertainty in the global economic environment, which makes supply chain risk management a key concern among multinationals.
The upstream non-selective herbicide supply faces problems such as overcapacity, sales pressure, insufficient production load and diversified trade settlement. On the other hand, the downstream channel is confronted with challenges such as price fluctuation, supply chain security, exchange rate fluctuation, intensified competition and rationale of procurement.
To this end, building a comprehensive response strategy backed by financial strength, guided by professional information service and supported by stable supply chain service, would help fix the pain points of distributors, thus enabling enterprises to move forward steadily.
Sino-Agri, with its unique financial strength, widespread distribution channel, distinctive cost advantage, supply chain superiority and state-owned business reputation, has laid a solid foundation for the business operation of burndown herbicides. The company collaborates with upstream partners to establish a cooperative platform to balance production capacity while expanding its sales network to more than 90 countries.
The company provides downstream partners with supply chain services, making an overseas credit line above RMB8.00 billion yuan available. Sino-Agri is integrating high-quality resources to get through to upstream suppliers and downstream channels, and it is committed to creating a value platform for burndown herbicides to build up a win-win business ecology.

Neonicotinoid pesticides are an essential component of the insecticide class, which cannot be ignored. Through in-depth data analysis, Xu Hui, President of Shandong Sino-Agri United Biotechnology, elaborated on the dynamic demand for neonicotinoid pesticides in the global market, and China’s production and export status in this industry. Xu Hui pointed out that although neonicotinoid pesticides are faced with fierce market competition, there is still a huge market potential in the next five years.
It is still promising for Chinese enterprises to explore production and innovation potentials in the business operation of neonicotinoid pesticides. In addition, Xu Hui stressed the potential opportunities of neonicotinoid pesticides and encouraged companies to actively seek cooperation in developing innovative products that meet market demand. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of keeping up with the global market dynamics. He called on companies to go for sustainable development with keen market insight and flexible strategy adjustment.

Yuan Yong, General Manager of Sichuan Lier Crop Science Co., Ltd, shared Lier’s insights into developing the C’l chlarnpyridine industry chain, from upstream to the field application. In times of overcapacity, the competition in the pesticide industry chain has extended from technical material production capacity, technical process and production cost to formulation products.
Lier’s formulation products are developed based on two principles – technical material-oriented operation and technical innovation-oriented product operation. Based on the market demand for burndown herbicides, Lier Crop Science has precisely developed a mixed application of triclopyr with glyphosate and glufosinate, which extends the use of triclopyr from traditional forestation use to broader use in the non-selective market, enabling intensive product applications to the wheat broad-leaf control.

Liu Shi, Executive Vice President of Da Bei Nong, talked about the impact of biotechnology on the future crop protection market. He says that biotechnology is a high-level technology versus the conventional seed industry. With the increased demand for efficient and safe herbicides in the market, selective herbicide use is decreasing, while the use of glyphosate is surging. Concerning the future GMO market, the total area of demonstrative GMO planting area in China is expected to reach 10 million mu (1 mu=1/15 Ha) by 2024, which indicates the promising prospect of commercialization of GM planting. Moreover, the presentation mentioned the great potential of applying gene editing technology to agricultural production, although technology maturity and market acceptance are still required. Finally, he predicted that the development of biotechnology would facilitate rapid consolidation within the seed industry. In the future, only a few companies can dominate the market, where the reduction in product variety and the increase in industry concentration show that the seed industry will usher in a more centralized and efficient era.
In the face of fierce market competition and constantly evolving challenges, some leading enterprises could successfully manipulate the waves of industry development via unremitting technical innovation and wise strategic deployment. This has not only reinforced the market position of these enterprises but has also contributed a lot to the prosperity and advancement of the whole industry chain.
Liu Shi, Executive Vice President of Da Bei Nong
Cao Xufang, Deputy General Manager, Shandong Huimeng Biotech, reviewed the development history of the Chinese pesticide industry and spoke about the future development direction. She says that although the pesticide industry has gone through several stages of development - from inception to capacity expansion, industrial restructuring, and up to the current stage of innovation-driven high-quality development, pesticides have always played an essential role in ensuring national food security. The presentation briefed Huimeng’s response strategies at different stages, including technical innovation, complete industry chain layout and integration with the international market. Cao Xufang called on industry colleagues to cooperate to explore new approaches to joint innovation and collaboration on a win-win basis and tackle the severe evolution of competition in the market.

Taking the consolidation of Limin Co., Ltd as an example, Gao Juncong, Marketing Center Director of Limin Group, elaborated on the resource integration of local pesticide enterprises in China and how the synergistic effects could be maximized. The presentation suggests that achieving brand internalization through resource integration, mergers and acquisitions is the key to corporate development based upon mergers and acquisitions. The presentation gave a systematic review of Limin’s development path from acquiring Shuangji and Weiyuan to purchasing the Dasheng brand, from marketing integration to ice-breaking integration in more depth. In industry overcapacity and market competition, Limin advocates building a new market ecology, empowering partners with advantageous products and creating a community of shared destiny. Moreover, Gao Jun stresses that when extending business to overseas markets, a company should maximize its advantages, pay attention to local team building, avoid blindly copying others, and seek and adhere to strategies that fit the company's self-development.
