EFSA studying cumulative pesticide risks
Date:06-05-2008
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is evaluating new ways to assess cumulative risks of pesticides, particularly for use in setting harmonised EU maximum residue limits (MRLs). The EFSA's plant protection products panel has proposed criteria for selecting groups of active ingredients for consideration in a combined risk assessment. It has also issued recommendations on the issues to be considered when carrying out such assessments. The panel suggests that the EU should share data with other countries that have already undertaken such assessments, but points out that such global collaboration will require further harmonisation of procedures. The US has been examining cumulative risks since 1996.
The panel's recommendations are available on the internet at: http://www.efsa.europa.eu/EFSA/efsa_locale-1178620753812_1178712607885.htm.
