Agchem costs cut Argentine wheat area
Date:05-30-2008
The Argentine wheat area is likely to fall by up to 10% for the 2008/09 planting season, the Ministry of Agriculture says. It expects a fall in the wheat area to 5.1-5.4 million ha. Last year’s crop covered 5.7 million ha. The high cost of inputs, such as pesticides and fertilisers, and the lack of moisture in the soil have led to indecision over planting of the crop among cereal farmers. Economic evaluations of alternative crops, such as barley and oilseed rape, which have good margins, are leading to farmers delaying their planting decisions.
