Bayer to register new Folicur products for wheat stem rust
Date:05-23-2008
Bayer CropScience plans to register new products based on the cereal fungicide, Folicur (tebuconazole),in Iran and Kenya to control the Ug99 strain of black stem rust (Puccinia graminis tritici) on wheat. Folicur is already registered in the two countries and was recently tested in Kenya for its efficacy against the disease. The company says that the trials showed that the fungicide effectively controls it. The Ug99 strain is highly damaging to previously resistant wheat varieties. It spread to Iran earlier this year, from Africa. Independent researchers have warned that it may spread across the Mediterranean and south-west Asia.
