Glyphosate-resistant grass in Paraguay GM soya
Date:05-08-2008
The perennial weed, sourgrass (Digitaria insularis), has appeared among Paraguay’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant soybean crops, the international science newswire, SciDev, reports. It is proving resistant to the application of the herbicide, glyphosate, Agriculture Minister Alfredo Molinas reportedly says. Farmers are considering a return to planting conventional seeds. Poor use of the herbicide is likely to be the cause of the weed’s appearance, SciDev adds. No figures for infested areas are available. Paraguay planted 2.6 million ha of GM soybeans in 2007, representing a 30% increase on the previous year. The latest official figures show that Paraguay planted some 2.4 million ha of soybeans for 2006/07 season. The GM area was 2 million ha.
