Romanian wheat crop to rise by 7% y/y in 2011

The agriculture minister Valeriu Tabara has announced that production of wheat could rise by 7% in 2011 to over 6 mmt this year despite the fact that the area cultivated is smaller than in 2010. In 2010, Romania's wheat production reached 5.6 mmt, up from 5.2 mmt one year earlier. Romania has put around 1.8 Mln ha under wheat compared to around 2.0 Mln ha last season, Tabara said. He added that he expects wheat exports to rise, but declined to give a figure.

Romania's wheat crop totaled 5.6 mmt in 2010, up from 5.2 mmt in 2009, according to preliminary data from the country's statistics board.
