Brazilian agrochemical industry representatives are concerned with the lack of supplies of the herbicide, glyphosate. Some 2,002 litres of the active ingredient were used last year in Brazil, according to the Brazilian agrochemical industry trade union, the Sindag. World demand for the product has risen considerably on the back of increased maize planting in the US and the use of the crop as an alternative to increasingly expensive petroleum. The latter is likely to lead to yet higher demand for glyphosate and lower stocks, the Sindag adds. It calls for investment in national formulation plants.
