FSANZ to approve Bayer's GM cotton for food use
Date:11-10-2017
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) today called for submissions on an application from Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd to seek approval for food derived from dual-herbicide tolerant cotton line GHB811.
FSANZ Chief Executive Officer Mark Booth said the cotton line had been genetically modified to be tolerant to glyphosate and isoxaflutole.
“FSANZ has conducted a thorough safety assessment based on best practice principles established by the World Health Organization and has not identified any public health or safety concerns,” Mr Booth said.
All FSANZ decisions on applications are notified to ministers responsible for food regulation who can decide to ask for a review or agree that the standard should become law.
The closing date for submissions is 6:00pm AEDST 21 December 2017.
