According to a USDA-FAS (US Department of Agricutlure – Foreign Agriculture Service) Global Agriculture Information Network (Gain) report, Turkey's 2008/09 wheat production forecast for has been raised slightly to 16.8 million metric tons (MMT).?
Area planted to wheat remains the same, but the production forecast has been increased due to higher estimated yields caused by lower-than-expected drought damage and use of higher quality seed. With the second crop corn harvest only partially finished, forecast corn production also has been increased to 4.15 MMT. However, with the price and premium of corn below growers’ expectations, many farmers say they will plant winter wheat, soybeans, and/or sunflowers instead of corn in the future. Paddy rice production is forecast at 700,000 MT (metric tons). The government premium for paddy rice production helped to increase the area planted, and yields this year were reportedly very good.
