Arysta LifeScience Corporation has received registration for its patented, post-emergent herbicide EVEREST® (flucarbazone) in South Africa. EVEREST®Herbicide – which is already in use in the United States, Canada, China, and parts of Europe and South America – controls green foxtail, wild oats and certain broadleaf weeds in spring wheat, durum and winter wheat. Wheat is a key crop in the Cape, which is now the major production area in South Africa, with nearly 400,000 hectares planted annually and yields of more than four tons per hectare.

“EVEREST is an important product that will add a lot of value to our entire business in this region,” said Max de Bollivier, marketing manager for Southern & Eastern Africa, Arysta LifeScience. “The excellent feedback received from the growers showed the strong need for an innovative wild oats control solution such our patented and unique EVEREST 70 WG.”

Although South African wheat plantings have decreased dramatically over the past 10 years from approximately 1.3 million hectares to less than 800,000 hectares, actual production has not dropped to the same extent. Improved yields have brought with them the problems of increased weed pressures and particularly the presence of annual grasses. The continuous use of specific herbicides over a long period of time has induced situations of severe resistance to many of the well-known selective grass herbicides. This situation has created a vital opportunity for the introduction of new chemistry in the form of EVEREST 70 WG.

“EVEREST is now the best tool for farmers to control wild oats and resistant varieties of canary grass weeds in South Africa,” added Marcel Dreyer, technical & marketing director Arysta LifeScience Southern & Eastern Africa.
