China learns from US at pesticide workshop

Chinese pesticide regulatory officials hoped to learn from their US counterparts at a Sino-US workshop on pesticide regulation in Beijing this month. The workshop, which ran for four days, aimed to give the Chinese authorities the opportunity to study US pesticide management techniques and regulations, and improve co-operation between the two countries. The US delegation included Dr Debbie Edwards, director of the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs. Zhang Yanqiu, director of the pesticide inspection office of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, hopes China’s pesticide regulation system can be improved, by raising the requirements of pesticide registrations, and widespread promotion of GLP standards. He says that 2008 is the “year of pesticide regulation management” in China.
