Makers of chemical fertilizers continue to make robust business in Philippines

“We continue to do well as farmers need [fertilizer] for producing certain crops such as corn and rice,” said UHI Executive Vice President Milagros Ong-How at the sidelines of the launch of the search for The Outstanding Farmers of the Philippines (TOFARM) 2012 held Tuesday in Quezon City.Ong-How, however, refused to disclose the company’s gross sales last year but hinted that 2011 was one of the best years for the firm.
UHI is a Filipino fertilizer company that manufactures, imports, and distributes all kinds of fertilizers for all types of crops for farmers.The company has two plants in Calamba, Laguna in the special economic zone of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.Meanwhile, the Junior Chamber International-Philippines (JCI Philippines) and UHI launched the search for the “most noteworthy achievers and achievements in the agriculture sector of 2012” on Tuesday.
JCI Philippines National President Randolf Ivan Ruste said TOFARM 2012 will cite public and private entities engaged in farming and includes traditional and modern farmers, fishers, animal raisers, cooperatives, farm communities, organizations, scientists, the academe, local government units and public employees as well as business entities in rural and urban areas.
TOFARM will give out 11 awards six in the individual category and five in the group category. Nomination period begins Aug. 1 and will end on Sept. 30. Awarding will take place in December.
How said she hopes the award will bring back the spotlight on farming, which has become an unattractive venture for Filipino youth.She recommended for the government to subsidize the equipment that farmers need to procure to help them prop up their production.
