Chemtura and the US company, Venomix (Kalamazoo, Michigan), have agreed to extend their collaboration on the development of insecticides based on spider venom peptides. Chemtura invested more than $1 million in Venomix in 2006. During the extended collaboration, the companies will agree annually on research milestones and payments. The first phase of the partnership focuses on the development of a “hybrid” peptide as a commercial insecticide. In the longer term, the companies aim to develop synthetic compounds that mimic the action of spider venom toxins. The technology is effective against commercially important pests, Chemtura says. It has the potential to “significantly enhance our current portfolio”, says Chemtura’s group president for crop protection, Gregory McDaniel.
