The UK Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD) has granted essential use status for the botanical insecticide, rotenone, in the UK until October 31st 2011 on apples, pears, peaches, cherries, ornamentals and potatoes. The essential use is limited to professional users with appropriate protective equipment. Advertisement, sale and supply have been approved until October 31st 2010 for essential uses. Approval holders are required to amend their labels by October 10th 2008 limiting applications to the listed crops. The approval for advertisement, sale and supply for any other uses will be withdrawn from that date, although approval will be given until October 10th 2009 for storage and use. The European Commission permitted France, Italy and the UK to continue specific uses of rotenone until April 30th 2011, but France and the UK expressed concern over the lack of alternatives.
