Ten of 11 recommendations on pesticide residues to Portuguese regulatory authorities are “in progress” and “action [has been] taken” on the other, the European Commission's Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) says. The recommendations are among 23 in the Office’s 2008 Portugal report but they are at the “close-out” stage, since the 2006 general review mission. The authorities fully complied with the FVO's recommendation to carry out systematic risk assessments on maximum residue limit (MRL) infringements, taking into account the draft proposal on how to notify the EU's Rapid Alert System for Foodstuffs. Five of the other ten recommendations are repeats following a 2003 FVO survey. The Office has carried out three inspections covering pesticide products in Portugal since 1999.
