The Chinese agrochemical company Hanghzou Udragon has recently received full registration from ICAMA for the active ingredient of triazole fungicide tetraconazole. Tetraconazole has curative and preventive activity in contrast to the solely preventive action of strobilurins, which dominate the maize sector.
Tetraconazole was developed by the Italian agrochemical company Isagro and is marketed as Domark since it was approved for use on soybeans in 2007 in US. Domark was extended for use on maize in 2011 by EPA.
Tetraconazole was listed in Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414). In 2010, the European Commission has removed all use restrictions when the active ingredient was re-registered in 2009,which included a maximum application rate on field crops of 100 g/ha every third year on the same field, and a prohibition of use on apples and grapevines.
The sales of Isagro’s tetraconazole improved strongly in the nine months of 2011 due to the EU removal of its use restrictions at the end of 2010, and higher sales in Brazil for use on cotton and soybeans.
