Nitenpyram patent to expire in China

The Chinese patent for the neonicotinoid insecticide, nitenpyram, expires on August 1st, opening up the market for generic products from Chinese competitors, according to the Chinese Crop Protection Industry Association, the CCPIA. The insecticide was developed by the Japanese company, Takeda Chemical, whose agrochemical business operated as a joint venture with Sumitomo Chemical since 2002 and was fully integrated into Sumitomo last year. Two Chinese companies have registered to begin production of the insecticide;they are Lianyungang Liben Agrochemical and Nantong Jiangshan Agrochemical. Over the past few years, China and India have demonstrated the greatest growth of generic manufacturers in the world. However, China is taking steps to consolidate its generic pesticide manufacturing industry, which is held back by over-capacity and outdated technologies.
