The French agrochemical industry association, the UIPP, has cautioned regulators in France as well as the EU to have a rethink on proposed regulations. Stressing the need for plant protection products to effectively protect crops and meet global food demand, it strikes a warning note on the consequences of arbitrary regulatory decisions.
It decries both the the Grenelle de l'Environment, the country’s new environmental policy, and the proposed revision of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414). It says that the Grenelle is aimed at a quantitative reduction in use of agrochemicals, while the revision of the EU regulation would result in the disappearance of many currently approved products.
The UIPP complains that the European Commission did not take into account the impact of these provisions on crop production in each member state. It says that if the text is adopted "as is", it will lead to the withdrawal of many triazole and dithiocarbamate fungicides and pyrethroid insecticides. It says that the industry is counting on the second reading in the European Parliament to sensitise MEPs to the loss of competitiveness in agriculture in Europe.
On the Grenelle de l'Environment, it says that the goal of reducing environmental impact of the industry would have been more logical than simply going in for a quantitative reduction.
