Argentine pesticide quality checks

Argentine pesticide quality control authorities withdrew eight pesticide products from 1,450 samples destined for import into or export from Argentina in 2007 due to irregularities. The Argentine national animal and plant health inspection service, the Senasa, has since reauthorised seven of the products after registrants had fulfilled requirements, such as the re-labelling of products or clarifying accompanying information, it says. The Senasa awaits the fulfilment of all requirements in the other case.
The authorities made eight “observations” on dockets that needed to be corrected before the relevant products could be marketed.
Products that failed tests were detained until they gained an appropriate test score in three consecutive rounds. They were for the plant growth regulator, alpha-naphthalene acetic acid sodium and the acaricide/insecticide, methamidophos.
Some 835 (58%) of the 1,450 samples were analysed during 2007. The samples were made up of 1,193 products for import and 257 for export. Some 56% of the import samples and 64% of those destined for export were analysed. Two samples of each targeted shipment were taken for laboratory analysis. The samples were made up of active ingredients and formulated products. The Senasa’s co-ordinator of agrochemicals and its directorate of agrochemicals and veterinary health products carried out the reviews. They inspect labelling and advertising of such products and have the power to restrict or ban their use.
