Argentine organic crop area up 9%

The Argentine area dedicated to organic crop production rose by 9% in 2007 against the previous year to 61,000 ha, according to the Argentine national animal and plant health inspection service, the Senasa. Most of the area was for the production of cereals and oil-based crops. They accounted for 59% of the area, while industrial crops made up 28%, fruits around 8% and about 4% was for vegetables and legumes. The organic cereal area was up by 32% to 22,260 ha, some 57% of which was for wheat and 15% was oats. Among industrial crops, the most planted were: sugar cane (37%), olives (36%) and grapevines (23%).
