EU farmers increased their cereal area by 6% to 59.8 million ha for the 2008 harvest, estimates the European farmers' co-operatives group, Copa-Cogeca. The move largely reflects the European Commission's decision to cut the EU set-aside rate from 10% to zero for autumn 2007 and spring 2008 plantings. The total oilseeds area is put at 11.1 million ha, up by 2.4%. However, the EU-25 (excluding Bulgaria and Romania) area of protein crops is estimated to have declined by 8.7% to 969,500 ha.
