In a letter to President-elect Barack Obama this week, CropLife America (CLA) President and CEO, Jay Vroom, notes the considerable agriculture challenges and opportunities our next president will inherit on taking office in January, 2009.

As much as "change" is what so many want and seek, we also see much in agriculture that is solid and will be the basis of change going forward, states Vroom in the letter. Some of the best examples can be found in the ways in which we have advanced in changing and improving agricultural output with the responsible application of science-based solutions.

Vroom emphasizes the extensive science inherent in crop protection development and production, highlighting progress in weed control technology over the years as an example of the evolution of crop protection products. The crop protection industry’s regulation by and cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also underscored.

Vroom states Thirty years ago, farmers were mostly reliant on herbicide technology that required pounds of chemical per acre for effective control of crop-choking weeds. Today, most farm crop areas are treated with weed control technology that relies on merely ounces of material per acre, and effectiveness has vastly improved. All of this, and everything our industry undertakes, is thoroughly regulated by consistent and transparent processes, mainly administered by US EPA. Change has been enabled because we can rely on consistent and effective regulation.
