Apr. 22, 2025
On April 21, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is releasing for public comment its proposed registration decision for products containing the new active ingredient cyclobutrifluram.
Cyclobutrifluram is proposed for registration for the control of nematodes and select soil and seedling diseases in and on turfgrass, ornamentals, romaine lettuce, cotton and soybean seeds. If approved, cyclobutrifluram will support integrated pest management – an approach that focuses on pest prevention and the judicious use of pesticides – as it can be applied in response to pest monitoring where alternative nematicide pesticides are applied prior to planting. This would also give farmers an additional tool to help manage crops and grow more food for our country.
EPA's Risk Assessments
EPA is also releasing its draft human health and ecological risk assessments, as well as a biological evaluation for the pesticide under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
No human health risks of concern were identified from the proposed uses of cyclobutrifluram when used according to label directions. EPA also conducted an ecological risk assessment and biological evaluation under the ESA and plans to initiate consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) after considering public comments. In its effects determination, EPA found that cyclobutrifluram was not likely to adversely affect any endangered or threatened species or their critical habitats. Depending on the final ESA effects determination, the consultation with FWS will be either informal or formal.
After considering public comments on the proposed registration and the draft risk assessments, EPA will determine whether the registration action meets the FIFRA registration standard. If EPA determines that the registration action can be granted, EPA will finalize the decision and the risk assessments including the ESA effects determination.
To read more about the proposed registration of cyclobutrifluram and to comment, see docket ID EPA-HQ-OPP-2022-0003 at www.regulations.gov. The public comment period will be open for 15 days, closing on May 6, 2025.
