BASF is to allow Canadian growers of its imidazolinone herbicide-tolerant Clearfield wheat to save seed for their own use from 2008. First-time growers will be required to purchase certified CDC Imagine seed from Viterra retail outlets, but they can save seed for future use. Annual testing must be carried out to ensure that the seed meets the required tolerance levels for Clearfield herbicides, but production contracts will no longer be needed. BASF recommends the use of the herbicides, Altitude FX (imazamox) and Adrenalin SC (imazamox + 2,4-D), on Clearfield wheat.
