US extends compliance for container rules

The US EPA has proposed a one-year extension for registrant compliance with the pesticide container labelling rules that were finalised in 2006. The Agency intends to extend the compliance date to August 17th 2010 after registrants raised concerns about their ability to meet the original 2009 deadline. Around 17,000 products are subject to re-labelling under the new rules, the EPA notes.
Registrants were also worried that unsold products returned at the end of the 2009 season would not comply with the new rules if resold. The Agency therefore proposes to change the “sold or distributed” phrase to “released for shipment” to cover such products. The final rule required all non-refillable containers to be labelled as such. However, the EPA has agreed to exempt certain containers that are “inherently non-refillable”, such as aerosols and pouches for water-soluble sachets, from this requirement.
