image.pngThe Government of India has taken a significant step toward enhancing fertilizer efficiency and sustainability by notifying Nano DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) under the Fertilizer Control Order (FCO) of 1985. This decision follows bio-efficacy trials and toxicology tests conducted by leading agricultural organizations. Companies such as Coromandel International Limited (CIL), Zuari Farm Hub Limited, and Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) have been granted manufacturing licenses for Nano DAP.

Development and Field Trials

According to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), both IFFCO and CIL have developed Nano DAP and conducted preliminary field trials on selected crops across ICAR Institutes and State Agricultural Universities. These trials indicate that Nano DAP, used as a seed treatment and in foliar applications, has the potential to reduce the dependency on granular DAP, traditionally applied to fields.

Production and Sales

The current production and sales data underscore the growing adoption of Nano DAP across India. The total production capacity for Nano DAP is 764 lakh bottles of 500ml each, with actual production reaching 262.44 lakh bottles and sales standing at 181.25 lakh bottles. Among manufacturers:

  • IFFCO’s Kalol Plant produced 177.06 lakh bottles, with sales of 111.98 lakh bottles.

  • Zuari Farm Hub Limited’s Bathinda Plant achieved production of 11.72 lakh bottles, selling 9.02 lakh bottles.

  • Coromandel International Limited’s Kakinada Plant recorded 73.66 lakh bottles in production and sold 60.25 lakh bottles.

State-Wise Adoption

Maharashtra emerged as the leading adopter, with sales of 35.39 lakh bottles, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 31.48 lakh bottles and Madhya Pradesh at 18.75 lakh bottles. Other states, including Karnataka (13.17 lakh bottles) and Rajasthan (12.89 lakh bottles), also demonstrated significant uptake, indicating the rising acceptance of Nano DAP among Indian farmers.

Promotion and Awareness Initiatives

To promote Nano DAP’s usage, the government has implemented several initiatives, including awareness camps, webinars, field demonstrations, and regional language films. Nano DAP is now available at Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samridhi Kendras (PMKSKs) nationwide.

The Department of Fertilizers has integrated Nano DAP into its monthly supply plans, ensuring its availability to farmers. ICAR has furthered awareness through its National Campaign on Efficient and Balanced Use of Fertilizers, which emphasizes the benefits of nano fertilizers.

Innovative Solutions: Namo Drone Didi Scheme

In a groundbreaking move to revolutionize fertilizer application, the government has launched the Namo Drone Didi Scheme, aiming to provide drones to 15,000 women Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Under this scheme, 1,094 drones have already been deployed, allowing for efficient and uniform application of nano fertilizers, reducing input costs and labor.

Nationwide Campaigns

A Maha Abhiyan has been initiated to promote Nano DAP across all 15 agro-climatic zones of India. Field-level demonstrations and awareness programs are being conducted in 100 districts to educate farmers about the benefits of Nano Urea Plus.

Challenges and Logistics

According to fertilizer companies, there are no significant challenges in the manufacturing or distribution of Nano DAP. This seamless operation ensures that farmers across India can easily access this innovative fertilizer.

Transforming Agriculture

The introduction of Nano DAP marks a pivotal moment in India’s journey toward sustainable and efficient farming practices. By reducing reliance on traditional granular fertilizers and promoting balanced fertilizer usage, Nano DAP is set to enhance crop productivity and reduce environmental impact.

Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Ms. Anupriya Patel, emphasized the importance of such innovations in her written reply to the Lok Sabha, underscoring the government’s commitment to empowering farmers with cutting-edge solutions.
