The European Crop Protection Association (ECPA) has called on the EU authorities to conduct an impact assessment of the proposal to introduce hazard-based cut-off criteria in the registration of pesticides. The ECPA made its request to Iztok Jarc, Agriculture Minister of Slovenia, which holds the EU presidency. Slovenia is drawing up new compromise proposals on agrochemical registration for the June meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers, after they rejected an earlier compromise text in May. The European Commission's original impact assessment for the planned revision of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) excluded the hazard criteria proposals, points out the ECPA. The new assessment should look at the impact of such criteria on food prices and the consequences for issues such as food quality, IPM, resistance management, and the production of minor crops, it says.
