Yuhong Wu, Director of Crop Subscription Services at Kynetec presented data and insights on the Brazilian biologicals market at the 5th Biopesticides, Biostimulants and Biofertilizers Summit - BioEx 2024, in China on March 8, 2024.

The market overview was driven by data and insights collected directly from farmers and included an overview of the crop protection market, deep dive on the biological pesticides market and review of the biostimulants market for soybean.

Key data highlights and trends presented by Yuhong included:

Crop Protection Market Overview

  • Trend of total market by crop: the total CP market value has increased significantly by +70% over 2 years, mainly due to price increases, particularly of non-selective herbicides

  • Soybean is the largest crop, accounting for 52% of cultivated area in 2023, gaining close to 60% value share

  • Whilst the share of biologicals in value terms at farm level is still small (4%), the growth in value is rapidly increasing, with a CAGR of +38% in the last 5 years, versus conventional CP products, with a CAGR of +12%

Biological Pesticides Market

  • Soybean remains the largest crop with +50% share in area and value, followed by corn and sugarcane

  • +70% of the market value is BioNematicides (soybean and sugarcane as key crops) and BioInsecticides (corn is the key crop)

  • Bionematicides in corn is considered a big growth opportunity

Biostimulants - Soybean

  • Soybean area treated with biostimulants has increased 17.5% from 2020 to 2023

  • An increase of 43% in biostimulant value between 2022-3 was mainly driven by product price

  • Foliar application remains the most common in soybean at 87% in value terms in 2023, with 13% of biostimulants in value terms applied as a soil treatment

Yuhong Wu concluded ″We believe biologicals will keep its rapid growth pace, surpassing conventional chemistry growth, within the context of the relatively small treated area. Consolidation of recent acquisitions by big brands as well as private equity investment will help maintain the pace of growth.″
