The Chinese government recently issued the No. 1 Central Document for 2024, which again emphasized the importance of ″agriculture, rural areas and farmers,″ garnering significant attention. Concerning the development of farming machinery in 2024 and beyond, the document outlines the need for robust efforts to rectify shortcomings in farming machinery and equipment. It also calls for improvements to subsidy policies for purchasing and utilizing farming machinery, as well as the establishment of a streamlined process, or ″green channel,″ for evaluating urgently needed farming machinery. The industry is expected to witness an acceleration in the promotion of farming machinery, which will benefit agricultural water-saving, agricultural reclamation, and high-quality farming machinery companies.

In recent years, China’s farming machinery industry has seen steady growth, boasting nearly 10,000 farming machinery companies and more than 20,000 distribution companies. A comprehensive operational system has also been established, covering the manufacturing of key equipment, components and parts, and the provision of product sales and other services, as well as the establishment of a well-functioning supply and distribution network.

In 2023, within the 14 foreign trade sub-sectors, the exportation of farming machinery products showed a positive trajectory, with a 33.5% year-on-year increase in the export volume of large and medium-sized tractors. Looking ahead, as China’s farming machinery manufacturing industry chain and supply chain continue to advance, coupled with the industry’s growing competitiveness, the industrial ecosystem will become more robust. The capacity to supply mid-to-high-end products will be strengthened, injecting vitality into the healthy development of distribution channels.

Chinese farming machinery fuels mechanization of Brazilian family farming

The launch ceremony for the China-Brazil Agricultural Mechanization Cooperation Demonstration Project recently took place in Apodi, Brazil. The first batch of 31 farming machinery products from seven Chinese companies arrived in Brazil to participate in the construction of the China-Brazil Agricultural Mechanization Cooperation Demonstration Farm.

In September 2022, the ″Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Agricultural Mechanization and Energy between China and Brazil″ was signed. China Agricultural University was given approval to participate in the construction of the project, titled ″China-Brazil International Transfer Platform for Advanced and Applicable Technologies in Agricultural Mechanization for Small and Medium-Sized Farmers.″

During the farm’s opening ceremony, Zhu Qingqiao, Chinese Ambassador to Brazil, said the project is an important move for China in terms of implementing the Global Development Initiative, and is a beneficial attempt by both China and Brazil to achieve social inclusion, eradicate hunger and poverty, and promote sustainable development. It will also have a positive impact on the relationship between the two countries.

Brazilian Vice President Alckmin and other officials stressed that the China-Brazil Farming Machinery Demonstration Project is significant and coincides with the development strategy of the Lula administration. The project is expected to help the northeastern region of Brazil overcome development bottlenecks in agricultural mechanization, accelerate the improvement of local people’s living standards, and promote social equity and sustainable development.

Paulo Teixeira, Brazilian Minister of Agricultural Development, said that this is ″historic day for Brazilian family farming,″ lauding the Chinese team for not only providing cutting-edge equipment but also sharing invaluable expertise, enabling the machines to seamlessly integrate and elevate the standards of Brazilian family farming. Teixeira hopes for the expanded presence of Chinese agricultural equipment in the most underprivileged northeastern regions of Brazil, with a vision for potential investments in establishing manufacturing facilities in the region.
