The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture is studying proposals to subsidise registration costs for pesticides for use on minor crops, the national Brazilian daily. The proposal is in response to the lack of products in the sector, due to the high cost of registrations. The lack of products affects the market chain for fruits, horticultural crops, vegetables and flowers, the newspaper adds.
The registration department of the Ministry of Agricultural Inputs reportedly says that the proposals would include two stages. The first would be the creation of a specific regulation among the three relevant Ministries (Agriculture, Health and the Environment) for the support of “marginalised” crops, while the other would be “linked to the development of risk and monitoring studies”. Laboratories that belong to the relevant Ministries and others such as the Brazilian agricultural research corporation, the Embrapa, would be linked via a network to support monitoring procedures. The aim “would be to reduce costs” and attract investment in products aimed at less profitable crops. The registration process includes safety and residue tests that cost up to R$40,000 ($24,100) each, he adds. The proposals are being discussed as part of new regulations to be added to Decree 4074/2000 covering payments for pesticide registrations.
