More than 30 agrochemical companies in Brazil have founded a pesticide container recycling company, Campo Limpio Reciclagem e Transformacao de Plasticos. It opened for business this month. Bayer CropScience, BASF, Dow AgroSciences and DuPont are among the participants, the pesticide container disposal organisation, the InpEV, says. The company has an initial investment of R$8 million ($4.7 million) and will have the capacity to process 4,500 tonnes of plastic a year for disposal or recycling. A recycling plant will start operations within a year. A further R$20 million ($11.7 million) will be invested in the company by 2011.
Campo Limpio president João Cesar Rando is bullish about the country’s waste disposal efforts. “Brazil is the world leader in pesticide container recycling with 95% of containers collected in 376 collection posts,” he says. Container collection in Brazil rose by almost a quarter in the first three months of 2008 to 5,528 tonnes, the InpEV adds. Brazil recycled over 21,000 tonnes of pesticide containers last year, a 7.6% rise on 2006. Colombia’s pesticide container recycling organisation, Campo Limpio, became an autonomous not-for-profit society earlier this year.
