The efficacy of triazole fungicides for use against Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) in Brazil is diminishing, several Brazilian farmer and research associations say. The reduced effectiveness of the fungicides has been reported for the last two seasons, especially for 2007/08. The reduction in the effectiveness of the fungicide, tebuconazole, has been especially marked. The Mato Grosso soybean farmers’ association, the Aprosoja, and the Brazilian soybean agricultural research corporation, the Embrapa Soja, say that poorer results were especially significant in the state of Mato Grosso, last year. Increasing resistance has not been proven to be the cause of the weakening efficacy, but the associations recommend the application of a combination of strobilurin- and triazole-based fungicides.
