The US EPA has determined that the fungicide, triforine, is eligible for re-registration provided that certain risk mitigation measures are taken. The Agency has no concerns over risks to human health, but it has identified chronic risks to mammals and birds. Triforine is used on ornamentals, mainly in residential areas. The Agency advocates limiting use to 20 applications each year and a label warning to reduce ecological exposure. All food uses of triforine were voluntarily cancelled in 1996 and tolerances revoked in 2004. The US registrant is Summit Agro (USA) Corporation. Sumitomo Corporation acquired BASF’s global triforine business in 2005.
