Kenyan farmers' crops have been severely hit by rice blast (Magnaporthe grisea). It has "wiped out almost half of their crop" in central Kenya, the country's Business Daily newspaper reports. The disease cropped up last year and has reportedly been rapidly spreading ever since due to unusually high rains, which create optimal conditions for it. Experts have suggested an integrated disease control programme, including the use of resistant varieties and chemical control, the newspaper adds.
