BASF is exploring options for a US $900 million expansion to its Nanjing plant, with production to begin as early as this year.
Among other improvements, the plan would increase the capacity of the steam cracker from 600,000 to 750,000 tonnes to produce chemical preliminary products that are processed to make plastics, paints, solvents, and pesticides. In addition, BASF wants to extend its capacities in Nanjing for tensides used in detergents, preliminary products for softeners, fuel additives, and super absorbers.
According to a company announcement, these expansions are intended to meet the growing demand in the Chinese market. BASF and Chinas Sinopec Group founded a joint venture in Nanjing eight years ago. So far, $2.9 billion has been invested.
