The US EPA has confirmed that US-nominated uses of the fumigant, methyl bromide, under critical use exemptions (CUEs) for 2010 amount to 15.7% of the 1991 baseline level of 25,528.3 tonnes. Some 4,008 tonnes of methyl bromide would be targeted at 15 critical uses, including tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, cucurbits, orchard replants and post-harvest treatments. The Parties to the Montreal Protocol are due to rule on the 2010 CUE nominations in November. The Parties allowed the use of 5,355.9 tonnes (21% of baseline) of methyl bromide for US CUEs in 2008, but the EPA only authorised CUEs amounting to 4,813.5 tonnes.
