Following a 15-year fight against the use of methyl bromide, which denudes soil of pests and disease prior to planting, the chemical has won an extra four years before farmers must meet greater pollution standards, effectively phasing out its use. Last month, the California Air Resources Board, along with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, revised the mandated standards meet-date from Jan. 1, 2008 to 2012.

Methyl bromide is used in California mostly for strawberries, which are a US $386 million-a-year industry. Although the Montreal Protocol -an international treaty designed to ban ozone-layer depleting chemicals -has reduced methyl bromide use by approximately 75% since 1991, it is still relied upon by about 19,000 of the 34,000 strawberry acres grown in California.
