The seed industry suffered its share of headaches, similar to farmers, caused by severe planting delays across the Corn Belt this spring.

But farmers shouldn’t have to worry about any major seed supply issues next year, barring a catastrophic end to the current growing season.

Seed industry representatives at the Farm Progress Show anticipate a productive harvest in the weeks ahead to go along with current inventory and the ability to source seed from other areas, such as South America.

“Seed production looks to be about as good as last year,” said Jeremy Stock, crop specialist at Prairieland FS in Mount Sterling.

“For our seed crop, we had to do some Plan Bs,” said Brent Tharp, agronomy manager for Wyffels Hybrids in Geneseo. “But we did get it in the ground in a fairly timely manner.

“And, from what I’m hearing about yield estimates on our seed crop, it looks to be coming in above target,” he noted. “We don’t anticipate any (supply shortages), although Mother Nature could certainly throw us a curveball. The biggest threat now is an early frost.”

Wyffels introduced 14 new hybrids for the upcoming season. Likewise, DeKalb unveiled eight new corn hybrids, including four in the Disease Shield class.

“From a supply standpoint, we feel fortunate. We can diversify our risk across the country and go to South America when we need to,” said Pete Uitenbroek, DeKalb/Asgrow marketing lead. “So, there’s no real concerns about supply at this point.”

DeKalb and Asgrow are part of the new Bayer PLUS Rewards program that offers expanded options for crop protection products and more cash incentives.

Starting with any two qualifying products, farmers can earn $3 per acre and up, building additional cash back on every subsequent qualifying product they purchase. Farmers can also earn $2 per acre on any Roundup brand ag herbicide, plus an additional $2 an acre when XtendiMax herbicide with VaporGrip is paired with Roundup.

Stone Seed customers also qualify for the Bayer PLUS program. The company offers strong early cash order incentives, according to Marcel Mesquita, Stone Seed brand manager.

“It’s been a tough year for sure for our customers, but our hybrids have been performing really well,” Mesquita said.

The industry also sits on a large amount of corn seed carried over this year.

“We’re prepared to meet the needs of farmers,” said Brock Helgerson, Channel Brand marketing lead. “Our brand is growing really fast. We’ve got production in place that’s very diversified, and we build safety stock every year.”
