Burkina Fasos commercial production of genetically modified cotton, which was to start last year, has been delayed until 2009. Although the country is yet unable to produce GM cotton on a large scale, it would certainly be able to do so by next year, a representative of the countrys main cotton buying company, Georges Yamego of Sofitex, told the AFP newswire. Critics have reportedly accused the government of hasty decision making that popularises GM crops, while neglecting to consider potential risks. The country has conducted GM field trials since 2003 in collaboration with Monsanto.
