Egypt's latest genetically modified Bt maize field trials have shown a high level of resistance against insect infestations, the International Services for the Acquisition of Agribiotech Applications newswire, CropBiotech, reports. While conventional maize faced infestation rates of 78%, the Bt maize was unaffected, Professor Magdy Masoud of the faculty of agriculture at the University of Saba Basha reportedly says. Professor Masoud is said to have informed the relevant authorities such as members of the Egyptian National Biosafety Committee, representatives of the national maize programme, and the Agricultural Economic Institute, of the results. The country recently reformed its National Biosafety Committee to strengthen its genetic modification expertise and performance.
