Sumitomo Chemical's US subsidiary, Valent USA Corporation (Walnut Creek, California), is to introduce two formulations of the neonicotinoid insecticide, clothianidin, for use on potatoes this year. Belay 16 WSG (clothianidin 16%) is for soil application at 16-18 oz/acre (1.1-1.2 kg/ha) and Belay 50 WDG (clothianidin 50%) is for foliar use at 1.5 oz/acre. Both are for the control of Colorado beetles (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), aphids and leafhoppers. Valent received federal approvals last month and expects state registrations in all potato-growing states, except California and New York, in time for the 2008 season. Valent gained rights to clothianidin from Arysta LifeScience last year.
