Bayer CropScience plans to introduce its post-emergence cereal herbicide, Infinity (pyrasulfotole 37.5 g/litre + bromoxynil 210 g/litre), in Canada this year. The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency granted conditional approval to pyrasulfotole last year. The PMRA approved a 50 g/litre suspension formulation of pyrasulfotole under the code number, AE0317309 02SE06, and the emulsifiable concentrate combination product, Infinity, for use on wheat, barley, oats, triticale and timothy grown for seed.
AE0317309 02SE06 has been approved for the control of lambsquarters (Chenopodium album), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus), wild buckwheat (Polygonum convolvulus) and volunteer canola at 1 litre/ha. Infinity has been approved for the control of a wide range of broadleaf weeds at 0.8 litre/ha.
Pyrasulfotole underwent a joint review by the authorities in Canada, the US and Australia. It is due to be introduced in combination with bromoxynil in the US, as Huskie, and in combination with MCPA, as Precept, in Australia.
Pyrasulfotole is a 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase inhibitor. This is the first new mode of action in the cereal broadleaf herbicide market for over 20 years, Bayer points out. The company has launched 11 new products in Canada in the past three years and has a further nine new products scheduled for introduction over the next five years, subject to approvals, it says.
