A private member's bill to ban the recognition and granting of patents covering genetically modified organisms has entered the Brazilian Parliament's lower house, the House of Deputies. The MP, Nazareno Fonteles, says that his proposed measure would benefit smallholders, who "could not [otherwise] afford to plant such crops", and avoid the loss of native species and the increased use of certain pesticides. He also argues that such intellectual property (IP) rights allow private entities to "appropriate nature" and result in inconsistent law, prohibiting the patenting of parts of some living things, but allowing it for GMOs. The bill would amend Brazil's IP law and redefine GMOs.
