Ukraine establishes plain tariffs for pre-release assessment of commercial GM crops

On Wednesday, November 18th the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted the Resolution # 1223 ”On Approval of the Tariffs’ Size to Hold Expertise for the State Registration of the GMO Types of the Agricultural Plants in the Open System” (in Ukrainian). The Resolution defines the tariffs to hold the expertise which could be basis for the State registration of GM crops. The document stipulates fixed cost for the following expertise:

• Examination of the documents attached to the application for the State registration of GM crops - 2600 UAH (~ 323 US$);
• Molecular genetic analysis (DNA isolation, identification of 35S promoter and nos- terminator, identification of genetic modification) - 597.57 UAH (~ 74 US$);
• Examination of crops for the variability, homogeneity, and stability - 3800 UAH (~ 472 US$);
• Studying the impact of the GMO on the development of wild and cultivated plants- 650 UAH (~ 81 US$);
• Determination of the possibility that GM crop becomes source of uncontrolled infections - 3500 UAH (~ 435 US$);
• Analysis of the production of specific substances in vegetative and generative organs of a plant for soya (2800 UAH), rape (650 UAH) and corn (2200 UAH) (~ 348, 81, and 273 US$, respectively);
• Evaluation of the completed documents attached to the application for State registration of GM crops - 500 UAH (~ 62 US$).
