Finnish research institute MTT Agrifood Research has introduced an Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer technique for barley. The research is part of an ongoing collaboration between MTT, the University of Helsinki, and Boreal Plant Breeding, to produce barley resistant to net blotch (Pyrenophora teres). Net blotch is the main barley disease in Finland and the gene transfer will act as an enabler to identify and verify the genes involved in the disease, rather than in the production of GM disease-resistant barley.
