Effective Methyl Bromide Alternative Expands into World Agriculture Marketplace Arysta LifeScience today announced Japan has granted commercial registration for YOKAFUME®, a broad-spectrum soil fumigant based on iodoemethane and marketed as MIDAS® in the United States. YOKAFUME® effectively controls a broad range of soil-borne diseases, nematodes, weed seeds and insects that threaten high-value crops and is approved for soil use for tomatoes, melons and commodity fumigation of chestnuts. An expansion of the label to include ginger and myoga is expected in 2010.
MIDAS®, approved by the U.S. EPA in 2007, does not deplete the ozone layer and is the only viable drop-in replacement for methyl bromide on the market today.
"The phase out of methyl bromide has impacted growers worldwide," said Mike Allan, Global Business Development Manager for Fumigants. "YOKAFUME® delivers to the Japanese agricultural marketplace a new standard for agricultural practices and technology that adheres to the highest standards for stewardship and environmental protection."
YOKAFUME® is applied pre-plant to bare soil and provides broad-spectrum crop protection which can reduce the need for other treatments and helps establish a strong healthy crop that delivers high yields. MIDAS® has proven to be a safe and effective product for more than 28 different agricultural commodities in the United States and has been applied to more than 13,000 acres in the U.S. in the past two years. Growers who apply MIDAS® have experienced results comparable to methyl bromide, with some growers reporting that MIDAS® contributed to higher yields than those produced by methyl bromide.
