The US biopesticide company, Marrone Organic Innovations (MOI -Davis, California), has agreed with Japanese firm JCS (Osaka) to develop a fungicide/bactericide/herbicide derived from an Asian tree extract. The identity of the extract is commercially sensitive, but it comes from the Cupressaceae plant family, MOI chief executive officer Dr Pamela Marrone said.
MOI has acquired rights to patents and toxicology data to develop products for use in agricultural crops, turf and home gardens. The company aims to apply for US approval in 2008, with commercialisation planned for 2009. JCS has developed antibacterial hand towels and antifungal veterinary products from the plant extract. Extensive toxicology testing shows that it has a high level of safety to mammals, the companies point out.
